Conceptual silences in theoretical debates: the case of gender identities and gender roles in sociological research
.
Abstract
.
We discuss notions of roles and identities and investigate ways in which these concepts may be of use in contemporary sociological research on gender. We ask what dimensions of these notions can give helpful insights into sociological studies. Accounts of the origins and developments of these concepts indicate reasons for the current situation where identity has gained prominence over the role concept in sociological debates. We discuss examples of current empirical research where these notions have been used. The overarching question we seek to address is what aspects of gender each of these concepts can help capture, and specific topics include how a broader investigation into the origins of concepts can help understand their current status and use. We conclude that the role concept’s association with functionalism has silenced debates about other approaches to the concept in sociology and call for renewed interest in alternative theories to invigorate debates.
